3 Foods to Help Curb Sugar Cravings

I gave up added sugar for Lent this year so it’s been 2 weeks since I had any bite of sweets, even bread, and geez, it has been tough! I can say that now that I’ve past the initial withdrawal symptoms, my cravings have become less intense and I’ve found that prepping some healthy snacks will definitely help curb sugar cravings.

For the last several months, I’ve been on a self-growth and mindfulness journey and I realized that this is sugar addition was getting a little out of hand. I was being mindful about eating better and exercising more, but I just couldn’t cut the sweets out. Research shows that sugar can become a real addition and there is even evidence that it stimulates your brain in a similar fashion to habit-forming drugs. High sugar intake has so many other detrimental impacts on your body and your mind. Because of this (and other reasons), I thought that giving up added sugar made sense for this season of Lent.

These 2 weeks have been a struggle, but I’ve been loading up on healthy foods and lots of fruits. Here are 3 Food items that have been on heavy rotation that have helped curbed sugar cravings.

1. Harney & Sons Caffeinated Hot Cinnamon Sunset

Ok, this is not a “food” per say, but this tea has undeniably helped curb my sugar cravings. It’s a caffeinated black tea with cinnamon and cloves and it smells and tastes so good! I’ve been having a cup pretty much every afternoon for the last couple of weeks.

2. Apples and Almond Butter

Fuji Apples are my favorite – I love the crisp, sweet taste and the combination with almond butter is divine! This is a great snack if you’re on the go or to take with you to work. If you have a Costco membership, I highly recommend their Almond Butter – so good! Here’s another good one that I love. And just a tip, make sure you look at the ingredients when you’re selecting your nut butter and be sure there aren’t any added sugars!

3. Baked Sweet Potatoes

Another snack that has been on heavy rotation are baked sweet potatoes. They’re great with some salt and pepper for a salty/sweet snack. I’ll even add a little bit of cinnamon if I’m feeling like I need an extra bit of a naturally sweet spice. They’re super easy to make and we make them office in my house because my 1 year old also love sweet potatoes – actually, she eats everything!

I’ve so far been very resilient the last couple of weeks so I’m actually really proud of myself for that! But, I have the whole month of March left in this season of Lent. And I know that there’s going to be some tough days ahead! I’d love to know if any of you have cut out sugar before? Do you have any favorite sugar-free foods or snack items that you loved?
